Part B.

A new name and a new life.

There are large time gaps in the records that I have located for William Holt’s family. Randolph Henry Holt was born in the Bagdad area on 26 November 1841, and the census indicates that Mary Ann and her two sons, Frederick and Randolph, were still with William in Tasmania in 1842.

It is known that William Holt, spouse of Mary Ann Holt (nee Peters), was living in Castlemaine Victoria by the early 1850s. He died by suicide in his cell in Castlemaine Goal, Victoria, on 4 APRIL 1858, when he was 68 years old.

As to the whereabouts of his wife Mary Ann I have found records of the following:

  • A Mary Ann Holt being charged in a Melbourne city court on 14 June 1858 with soliciting prostitution.
  • A Mrs Holt selling a hut and land in Forest Creek, Castlemaine in March 1859. (William had property in 1855).
  • A Mary Ann Holt and a Frederick Grant both buying land at Wombat, NSW in August 1874.
  • A Mrs Mary Holt being buried in Sydney by her friend Mr James McLaughlin in June 1895

Any or none of these events may in fact be linked to Mary Ann Holt (nee Peters).

The first record that I am confident applies to the adult Frederick Adolphus Holt is that of his marriage (under the assumed surname Grant) to Ellen Bridget Gorman in 1861.

The first record I have for the adult Randolph Henry Holt is the account of him being with his brother when a warrant for Frederick’s arrest for desertion is issued in May 1864. (Ellen and Frederick Grant had at least two small sons at this time, and their son Charles was born in the August of 1864.) Randolph Henry retained the surname Holt, however he had been known locally as Henry Robert Holt when he died in a riding accident on the Palmer Goldfields in far north Queensland.
