Cunnamulla 1903 -  Hairdressing and raising a family.

My great grand-mother, Margaret Jane Doyle, married Thomas Henry Grant on April 25, 1897.

The earliest Queensland Electoral Roll record for Thomas that I have located is for 1903. Thomas and Margaret Jane Grant, and a Frederick Grant (who I believe was Thomas’s brother), are all residing in Watson St Cunnamulla in 1903. By this time Thomas is working as a hairdresser, and Frederick is a labourer.

The oral tradition shared with me by descendants of this Frederick Grant was that “the two of them, carrying their swags, came over the border just after the shearers strike.” (The source could not verify that Thomas and Frederick were brothers.)

On 19 Sep 1904 Frederick John Grant married Ada Maud Fogarty. The Queensland Electoral Roll for 1905 shows the four still residing at Watson St. Cunnamulla.

A 1911 census record shows that they are all still in Cunnamulla AND it also supplies the date that they were first placed on the roll. This record shows that Thomas Grant was registered on 25th June 1897, and that Frederick was registered on 6 June 1898.

My great-grandmother Margaret Jane Grant (nee Doyle) with two daughters.

The family remained in Cunnamulla until the 1920s. At this time they moved to the town of Wyandra which lies 110 kilometres (68 miles) north of Cunnamulla.

They were established in Wyandra running the Commercial Hotel at the time of Bernadine Monica’s marriage to Alexander William (“Sonny”) Frazer on 21 March 1921.

(The proprietor of the hotel was Mr John Moody.)
