The Children of Frederick and Ellen Grant

My research indicates that Frederick and Ellen Grant had at least 14 children (other than Thomas Henry ). I have been unable to locate a birth record for three of the children who would have been born in the 1860s: Edward Albert, Randolph Henry, and Thomas Henry.

Birth, marriage and death registrations commenced at Young from July 1862. Prior to this registration was made at Binalong or Yass (or not at all). Registration at Murrumburrah commenced about 1877. (In NSW the registration district does not mean that the event occurred in that town).

Among the details that were recorded when Frederick A. Grant/Holt was admitted to hospital in 1909 are the names of several of his children. It is also noted that he had two sons already deceased. (He states that he does not know his wife’s address.)

At the time of Ellen B. Grant’s death her daughter Maude supplied the names of several siblings for the death certificate.

I have noted these facts beneath the birth records that are shown below.

I believe that the people with birth records listed below are highly likely to be siblings of my great grandfather, Thomas Henry Grant.

(In some instances the birth dates included on the column of names are estimates based on sources other than  birth certificates.)

‘EDWARD’ Named in a newspaper report of his accidental death

‘CHARLES’ Named in a newspaper report of his accidental death

‘Mildred’ Named on Ellen’s death certificate - details supplied by Maude.

‘FREDERICK’ Named in Frederick A.Grant’s hospital admission details & Ellen’s death cert.

‘MARY’ Named in a newspaper report of a court case & Ellen’s death cert.

‘RANDOLPH’ Named in Frederick A.Grant’s hospital admission details & Ellen’s death cert.

‘SARAH’ Named on Ellen’s death certificate - details supplied by Maude.

‘HARRY’ Named in Ellen Grant’s funeral notice and her death certificate.

‘Maud’ Named on Ellen’s death certificate - details supplied by Maude.

‘BASIL’ Named in Frederick A.Grant’s hospital admission details  & Ellen’s death cert.

‘Ethel’ Named on Ellen’s death certificate - details supplied by Maude.

‘OSWALD’ Named in Frederick A. Grant’s hospital admission details  & Ellen’s death cert.

* On Ellen’s death certificate, Maude Grant supplied the names: Mary, Mildred, Sarah, and Ethel as being the names of her mother’s daughters. (I have indicated above how these baptismal names match the details for the birth registrations.)

* A “Miss S. Grant of the Commercial Hotel” is named in Ellen’s obituary. Selina did not marry, the reference is likely to be to her.

** In the account below of the death of Charles Grant, his father Frederick is reported as stating that Charles is his third son. If this detail is correct then it is my belief that either Thomas Henry Grant was born in 1864 as Charles’ younger twin, or that Thomas Henry’s birth year was 1865 or 1866 - not 1863 as recorded at his burial.
