Charleville 1892 - Alexander Frazer married Agnes Jane Stewart

Alexander Frazer, the third son of Alexander (Jnr) Frazer, was seven years old when his family left Binda and began the trek to Queensland. On May 30, 1892, when he was 21 years old, he married Agnes Jane Stewart in All Saints Church of England, Charleville, Queensland.

Agnes Jane’s parents were James and Honora Stewart. Records show that James Edward Stewart married Hannah Doody in Goulburn NSW early in Sept. 1857. The couple moved around a great deal throughout New South Wales and Victoria. They had eight sons and one daughter, Agnes Jane. (She was born in Sandhurst, Victoria on July 31, 1871). By the early 1880s the family was living in the St George region of Queensland. James was working as a hawker. They fell upon hard times and James was forced insolvent in November 1884.

Honora Stewart (nee Doody) died in Cunnamulla on 16 Feb 1889 The death certificate recorded the names of her parents as being Daniel Duday and Katherine Dillon. It stated that she was 57 years old when she died, and that she had been 20 years old when she married. The death certificate also listed the names of eight of her nine children (the unnamed deceased male was James). The children of James and Honora Stewart were: Edward Simon (1858 - 1935), James Henry (1859 - ), Harry John (1861 - 1940), Charles Edward (1863 - 1946), John Carter (1865 - 1954), Daniel William (1867 - 1939), Septimus (1870 - 1915), Agnes Jane (1871 - 1948), and Thomas James (1875 - 1954).

James Edward Stewart only survived his wife by a few months, he died in Bourke in 1889. The marriage certificate states he was born at Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, England. His parents were John Stewart and Harriet Walker. At the time of marriage they worked at  Shelley’s Flats. I have not yet been successful in finding the shipping records for either James Edward Stewart’s or Honora Doody’s journeys to Australia. In James’s case there are a number of men named James Stewart who arrived aboard several ships within the possible date range. I have been unable to confirm any shipping record as definitely being that of my great-great grandfather, James Edward Stewart.

While I have not yet found the ship that Honora emigrated on, I did locate the shipping record for her sister who was Ann Doody. Ann Doody arrived in Australia on 31 Jul 1857 aboard the Aloe. She is recorded as being a native of the town Askeaton, in County Limerick, Ireland. Her father was alive, but her mother Catharina was dead. Ann didn’t know the address of her sister, Honora Doody but states that she is already in the colony. Honora is shown as Ann’s depositor. (After 1852, most immigrants who received assisted passages did so through relatives and friends.) Ann could neither read or write, so it is unlikely that young Honora could do so when she arrived.
